Vertrekken naar Singapore, een bekend leven verruilen voor een (nog) onbekend Leven in Singapore. Een land waar ‘Dependant’ een officiële status op je ID is. Hoe is dat eigenlijk?
In de serie Portret Interviews vertellen Expats openhartig over hun proces van landen in Singapore en hoe ze zichzelf binnen deze nieuwe context opnieuw hebben gepositioneerd. Voor de één is het een proces van vallen en opstaan en voor de ander is het één groot positief avontuur. Toch zijn er opvallende overeenkomsten in hoe ze kijken naar de voor- en nadelen van het leven in Singapore. En er zijn bruikbare tips die ik graag met je deel.

😀 Gaaf aan Singapore
“Waarom is Singapore voor jou een fijn land om te wonen?” Die vraag heb ik aan alle geïnterviewden voorgelegd. Opvallend genoeg is het rijtje positief voor bijna iedereen gelijk.
- 👮♂️ Veilig & Schoon!
In Singapore voel je je 24/7 veilig. Je kunt zelfs je tiener rustig in het donker met de MRT op pad sturen, je tas hoef je niet krampachtig onder je oksel te klemmen en de kans dat er thuis bij je wordt ingebroken is nagenoeg nihil. En het is Schoon met een hoofdletter S! De kans dat je over een bananenschil uitglijdt is minder groot dan dat je over een Varaan struikelt. - 🌴 Stad & Natuur
De combinatie van een moderne grote stad met natuur is ongekend. Het is lastig je er een voorstelling van te maken als je hier nog nooit bent geweest, maar de expats zijn het er unaniem over eens dat dit Singapore bijzonder en ontzettend leefbaar maakt. De ambitie van Singapore is om een ‘city in a garden’ te zijn en dat werpt haar vruchten af. - 🏊♀️ Luxe wonen
Okay, eerlijk is eerlijk dat zwembad met palmbomen dat veel van de foto’s richting het thuisland kleurt, is jaloersmakend en enigszins luxe-poppetje-bevestigend. Het is niet alleen dat zwembad dat het comfortabel maakt, ook de gym die tot de standaardfaciliteiten behoort maakt het luxe. Voor een beetje woonoppervlakte tel je wel een klein fortuin neer, maar het gaat hier om de voordelen 😉. - 🌞 Tropische klimaat
Winterjassen, truien, laarzen en lange broeken kunnen achterblijven. Het is altijd warm (gemiddeld 30 graden) en je kunt uit de voeten met een garderobe bestaande uit floddertjes en slippers. - 👭 Expat Community
Singapore kent een grote Expat Community. Er wordt veel georganiseerd en je voelt je welkom. Ook de Singaporeans zijn gewend aan het samenleven met expats. Je bent hier geen vreemde eend en dat maakt het makkelijk om hier te leven. Dat Engels de officiële taal in Singapore is, maakt het overigens extra gemakkelijk om je hier thuis te voelen. - 🚆 OV
Lang leve de MRT en het bussysteem in Singapore. Het is perfect georganiseerd, heel betaalbaar en brengt je snel naar waar je ook maar wilt zijn. Het hebben van een auto is, naast onbetaalbaar, daarmee overbodig voor de meeste mensen. Bijkomend voordeel is dat er relatief weinig auto’s rijden en je niet tussen de uitlaatgassen leeft. - ✈️ Travel HUB
Singapore is een super uitvalsbasis voor reislustige lieden. Je vliegt makkelijk en heel betaalbaar naar de mooiste plekken in Azië en ook Australië ligt ineens binnen handbereik. - 🌍 Cultuur / Culturen
Singapore is een stad/land voor iedereen! Wat je achtergrond ook is, je bent en voelt je welkom. De officiële taal is Engels en dat maakt het makkelijk om je er snel thuis te voelen. De nationale feestdagen zijn verdeeld over de grootste geloven: Boeddhisme, Christelijk, Hindoeïsme en Islamitisch.
In het stadsbeeld van Singapore, dat vooral architectonisch indrukwekkend is, zijn de contrasten tussen oud & nieuw prachtig. Er zijn tal van musea waar je je dagen in kunt vermaken en gidsen je graag meer vertellen over de achtergrond van alle culturen in Singapore. (Tip: wordt lid van Friends of the Museum: FOM). - 🥢 Eten
Last but not least verdient het eten in Singapore een plek in de tops van leven in Singapore. Alle keukens zijn vertegenwoordigd waarvan de Aziatische natuurlijk het meest authentiek is. Er is een smakelijke en toegankelijke eetcultuur binnen Singapore. Op elk moment van de dag kun je terecht bij een restaurant of een Hawker (foodcourt). Geen mediterrane etenstijden in Singapore, je kunt rustig om 16:00 uur al een groot bord Char Kway Teow of Laksa bestellen. Om 20:00 uur ben je overigens net zo welkom. De keukens sluiten relatief vroeg en zeker in de lokale hawkers is er meer een lunch dan diner cultuur.
😏 Wat zijn minder leuke kanten van wonen en leven in Singapore
En er zijn ook wat minder leuke kanten, al is dat rijtje aanzienlijk kleiner dan de positieve kanten.
- 👩💻 Arbeidsmarkt voor Dependants
Met stip op nummer 1 en door iedereen genoemd is het niet (makkelijk) kunnen werken als Dependant (de officiële ID status die je als Expat Wife krijgt). De vergunningseisen zijn zo strikt dat de kans op een baan klein is. Frustrerend (lees ook: De Trailingspouse en de droombaan). - 🤯 Arbeidsethos in Singapore
Daaraan gekoppeld wordt de Singaporese arbeidsethos, die erg afwijkt van de Nederlandse, als nadeel gezien. Parttime werken komt hier nauwelijks voor en de organisatiecultuur is hiërarchisch en directief. Lange werkweken, weinig vakantiedagen en doen wat de baas je opdraagt is de norm. - 🪆 Integreren
Het wordt als lastig ervaren om echt contact te leggen met Singaporean. Daarmee blijf je toch een beetje een buitenstaander en blijven je sociale contacten veelal beperkt tot de Expat Bubble. - 💰 Duur
Singapore is samen met New York de duurste ‘stad’ om te wonen. De huren zijn exponentieel gestegen de afgelopen 1 ½ jaar en ook onderwijs – internationale scholen kosten al snel meer dan 50.000 SGD (€34.000) per jaar – is voor een expat een enorme kostenpost. De geneugten des levens zijn eveneens pittig geprijsd, een pakje sigaretten kost 15 SGD (dik €10) en een fles chateau migraine begint bij 20 SGD (ruim €13,50). Om over autobezit nog maar te zwijgen. - 💧 Luchtvochtigheid
Ondanks dat het tropische weer ook in de tops staat, komt het weer ook terug in het rijtje ‘minder aan wonen Singapore’. Het is er namelijk niet alleen warm maar ook vochtig. Dat is niet goed voor je inboedel maar ook je lijf en hoofd kan het wel eens zat zijn.
Tips om je sneller thuis te voelen in Singapore
Singapore is een mooi land met diverse lagen. Het begrijpen en positioneren van jezelf in deze nieuwe context is een intens en leerzaam proces. Het goede nieuws is dat velen je zijn voorgegaan en dat er veel mensen op dit moment in hetzelfde schuitje zitten. Check de onderstaande tips die je helpen om je plek te vinden in Singapore.

Leaving for Singapore, exchanging a familiar life for an (yet) unknown life in a country where ‘Dependant’ is an official status on your ID. How does that actually feel?
In the Portrait Interviews series, Expats candidly share their experiences of landing in Singapore and how they have rediscovered themselves within this new context. For some, it’s a process of trial and error, while for others, it’s one big positive adventure. However, there are striking similarities in how they view the advantages and disadvantages of living in Singapore. And there are useful tips that I would like to share with you.

😀 What’s great about Singapore
“Why is Singapore a great country for you to live in?” I asked this question to all the interviewees. Interestingly enough, the list of positives is almost the same for everyone.
- 👮♀️ Safety & Cleanliness!
In Singapore, you feel safe 24/7. You can even send your teenager out in the dark with the MRT without worry, you don’t have to clutch your bag tightly under your armpit, and the chances of a break-in at home are almost non-existent. And it’s Clean with a capital C! The chances of slipping on a banana peel are smaller than stumbling over a Monitor Lizard. - 🌴 City & Nature
The combination of a modern big city with nature is unparalleled. It’s hard to imagine, but expats unanimously agree that this makes Singapore unique and incredibly livable. Singapore’s ambition is to be a ‘city in a garden’, and it is succeeding. - 🏊♂️ Luxury Living
Okay, let’s be honest, that pool with palm trees that colors many of the photos towards the homeland is envy-inducing and somewhat luxury-princess-confirming. It’s not just the pool that makes it comfortable, the gym that is part of the standard facilities also adds to the luxury. You do have to pay a small fortune for a bit of living space, but we’re talking about the advantages here 😉 - 🌞 Tropical Climate
Winter coats, sweaters, boots, and long pants can stay behind. It’s always warm (average 30 degrees) and you can get by with a wardrobe consisting of flimsy clothes and flip-flops. - 👭 Expat Community
Singapore has a large expat community. There are many organized activities and you feel welcome. Singaporeans are also used to living with expats. You’re not a stranger here, which makes it easy to live here. The fact that English is the official language in Singapore also makes it very easy to feel at home. - 🚊 Public Transportation
Long live the MRT and bus system in Singapore. It’s perfectly organized, very affordable, and takes you quickly wherever you want to go. Having a car is, besides being unaffordable, unnecessary for most people. - ✈️ Travel HUB
Singapore is a great base for travel enthusiasts. You can easily and affordably fly to the most beautiful places in Asia, and even Australia is suddenly within reach. - 🌍 Culture / Cultures
Singapore is a city/country for everyone! No matter what your background is, you are welcome and will feel at home. The official language is English, which makes it easy to settle in quickly. The national holidays are divided among the major religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam.
In the cityscape of Singapore, which is mainly architecturally impressive, the contrasts between old and new are beautiful. There are numerous museums where you can spend days exploring, and guides are happy to tell you more about the background of all the cultures in Singapore. (Tip: become a member of Friends of the Museum: FOM). - 🥢 Food
Last but not least, the food in Singapore is absolutely amazing. All cuisines are represented, with Asian cuisine being the most authentic. Singapore has a tasty and accessible food culture. You can go to a restaurant or hawker at any time of the day, no Mediterranean eating times here. If you feel like a big plate of Char Kway Teow or Laksa at 5:00 pm, you can have it. And you’re just as welcome at 8:00 pm. The kitchens do close relatively early, especially in the local hawkers, where there is more of a lunch culture than a dinner culture.
😏 What are the downsides of living in Singapore?
Of course, there are also downsides, although the list is considerably smaller than the positive aspects. This is logical, as people who truly do not find their place here have left already.
- 👩💻 Job market for dependants
Ranked number one and mentioned by everyone is the difficulty of finding work as a dependant (the official ID status given to expat wives). The permit requirements are so strict that the chances of finding a job are very slim (check for more background about this topic the blog: The Trailingspouse and the dream job) - 🤯 Work ethic in Singapore
Linked to this is the Singaporean work ethic, which is seen as a disadvantage compared to the Dutch work ethic. Part-time work is rare here, and the organizational culture is hierarchical and directive. - 🪆 Integration
It is perceived as difficult to establish real connections with Singaporeans, which some expats find unfortunate. - 💰 Cost of living
Singapore, along with New York, is the most expensive “city” to live in. Rents have exponentially increased in the past 1 ½ years, and education – international schools cost an average of 50,000 SGD per year – is a huge expense for expats. The pleasures of life are also priced steeply, with a pack of cigarettes costing 15 SGD and a bottle of Chateau Migraine starting at 20 SGD. Not to mention the cost of owning a car. - 💧 Humidity
Despite the tropical weather being seen as an advantage, it is also listed as a downside of living in Singapore. It is not only hot but also humid, which is not good for your belongings and can also take a toll on your body and mind.
Tips to feel at home faster in Singapore
Singapore is a beautiful country with diverse layers. Understanding and positioning yourself in this new context is an intense and educational process. The good news is that many have gone before you, and there are many people in the same boat right now. Check out the tips below to help you find your place in Singapore.
