Parksuites Orchard is een plek om te landen in Singapore. Expats in afwachting van de overdracht van hun condo of mensen met een tijdelijke klus in Singapore, kiezen voor dit soort ‘short stay appartments’. Een kleur aan mensen passeert en een aantal springt er uit.

‘Three-coffee-now-Lydia’: Haar oranje/rood geverfde haar is opgestoken en vastgepind met knijpconstructies vol glitters die het onder haar staccato bewegingen en haar schelle stem begeven nog voor ze haar derde kop koffie naar binnen geslobberd heeft. ‘Three-coffee-now-Lydia’ draagt een lange zwierige broek met een wijd kleurrijk gewaad om haar vierkante lijf en een zonnebril waar onze WC-bril jaloers op kan zijn. Alles aan haar lijf behalve haar karakter schittert. Iedere ochtend schuifelt ze op haar dikgezoolde Louis Vuitton badslippers met veel omhaal en presence de lobby door om vlak voor Mascharay’s koffiedomein te eindigen waar ze tot ‘three-coffee-now’ commandeert. Voor alle duidelijkheid herhaalt ze dit twee keer kort achter elkaar terwijl ze drie vingers opsteekt. Ondertussen installeert ze zich met karaoke-tablet aan een tafel om uit volle borst valser dan vals met Indiase medleys mee te zingen. ‘Three-coffee-now-Lydia’ was 30 jaar geleden een jonge mooie vrouw en verleidde een rijke Bollywood producer die haar als eerste vrouw huwde. Sinds haar schoonheid en zijn roze bril in verval raakten, stuurt hij ‘three-coffee-now-Lydia’ met ongelimiteerd budget de wereld rond. Parksuites Orchard is haar 30^ste verblijf en ze vindt het hier heerlijk. Mascharay maakt de heerlijkste koffie en de lobby met haar hoge plafonds geeft extra cachet aan haar dagelijkse zangmiddag.

‘You are so beautiful-Mascharay’: ‘You-are-so-beautiful-Mascharay’ zorgt er iedere doordeweeks dag voor dat alle gasten tussen 07:00 en 15:00 uur voorzien worden van koffie. Iedere dag weer vertelt ze mij hoe mooi ik ben en hoe lekker de melk ruikt die ik vooraf in mijn short stay appartment warm gemaakt heb zodat zij er verse bonen koffie overheen kan laten stromen. In het weekend is ze vrij en is er geen koffie te krijgen in Parksuites Orchard. Dat is een ongezellig en duur besluit van het management, de koffie bij Starbucks om de hoek is ook lekker maar zonder compliment en voor SGD 9 toch wat bittersweet. Deze week is ‘you-are-so-beautiful-Mascharay’ niet geweest. Ik ben bang dat ze ontslagen is omdat ze in de koffie van ‘thee-coffee-now-Lydia’ gespuugd heeft. Haar zie ik namelijk ook niet meer.

‘Excersice-lady-Steve’: ‘Excersice-lady-Steve’ heeft een gezin en komt uit ‘the States’. Hij reist regelmatig voor een week of zes naar Singapore. Dan verblijft hij altijd in hetzelfde appartement in Parksuites Orchard, nummer 69. ‘Exercise-lady-Steve’ haalt alles uit zijn verblijf in Singapore. Met de MRT reizen doet hij niet. ‘Excersice-lady-Steve’ heeft namelijk een ontzettend belangrijke en drukke job met onregelmatige tijden en moet op elk gewenst moment van ‘hot naar haar’ kunnen vliegen. We komen ‘excersice-lady-Steve’ dit weekend tegen als we elkaar kruisen op de trap en maken een praatje. Onderaan de trap blijft een jonge Filipijnse vrouw staan, type sportief, kort spijkerrokje, een roze hemdje en instap-loafers met een elegant hakje. Na een minuut of vijf verexcuseert hij zich waarbij hij een hoofdbeweging naar de jonge vrouw maakt: “mijn excersise lady wacht, we zouden gaan joggen maar ik ben mijn hardloopschoenen vergeten” verklaart hij. Als wij even later aan het zwembad liggen, komt ‘excersice-lady-Steve’ terug van weggeweest met een tas in zijn hand. ‘Excersice-lady’ volgt hem op zo’n vijf meter afstand de trap op richting zijn appartement. Wat fijn voor ‘excersice-lady-Steve’, zeggen wij tegen elkaar, hij heeft hardloopschoenen gevonden. We genieten nog een heerlijk uur aan het zwembad. ‘Excersice-lady-Steve’ hebben we die dag niet meer gezien.

‘Insta-Tanya: ‘Insta-Tanya’ heeft een killer body en een gladde vriend. Je ruikt hen voor je ze ziet, een mengsel van kokosolie en dure parfum. ‘Insta-Tanya’ verwisselt haar kleding voor een minuscule bikini open en bloot bij de wastafel in de openbare toilet. Ze is aan het sparen voor een borstvergroting. Daarna zal ze zich waarschijnlijk niet meer omkleden in het openbaar, maar nu valt er niets te verbergen. Na haar dagelijkse foto-shoot op en rond Orchard, zijgt ze neer op haar ligstoel aan het zwembad die door haar gladde vriend in de juiste positie is neergezet. De komende twee uur zorgt ‘insta-Tanya’ voor een gelijkmatige lichaams- / zonverhouding. Ze is erg lenig. Haar gladde vriend vergezelt haar de helft van de tijd. De andere helft doet hij boodschappen voor ‘insta-Tanya’ en voert hij luidruchtige telefoongesprekken in een mij onbekende taal.

Er schijnt ook nog een Nederlandse vrouw te verblijven in Parksuites. Veeleisend maar vriendelijk. Ze geeft geen fooi aan housekeeping, zo hoor ik twee dames van housekeeping zich beklagen. Jammer dat ik haar nog niet ontmoet heb, wie weet klikt het.

Parksuites Orchard is a place to land in Singapore. Expats awaiting to move into their condo or people with an assignment in Singapore choose this kind of ‘short stay apartments’. A variety of people pass by and a few stand out.

‘Three-coffee-now-Lydia’: Her orange/red-dyed hair is pulled up and pinned in place with pinchers full of glitter that give way under her staccato movements and her shrill voice even before she has gulped down her third cup of coffee. ‘Three-coffee-now-Lydia’ wears long dashing trousers with a wide colorful robe around her square body and sunglasses that our toilet seat would be jealous of. Everything about her body except her character sparkles. Every morning, she shuffles through the lobby on her high-soled Louis Vuitton bathing slippers with much ado and presence to end right in front of Maschary’s coffee corner where she commands to ‘three-coffee-now’. For clarity, she repeats this twice in quick succession while raising three fingers. Meanwhile, she installs herself at the table with a karaoke tablet to sing along with an Indian medley at the top of her voice. ‘Three-coffee-now-Lydia’ was a young beautiful woman 50 years ago and seduced a rich Bollywood producer who married her as his first wife. Since her beauty and his rose-coloured glasses fell into disrepair, he sends ‘three-coffee-now-Lydia’ around the world with unlimited budget. Parksuites Orchard is her 30th stay and she loves it here. Maschary makes the best coffee and the lobby with its high ceilings adds reverberation to her daily singing afternoon.

‘Excersice-lady-Steve’: ‘Excersice-lady-Steve’ has a family and he is from ‘the States’. He regularly travels to Singapore for about six weeks. Then he always stays in the same apartment in Parksuites Orchard, number 69. ‘Excersice-lady-Steve’ makes the most of his stay in Singapore. Traveling by MRT doesn’t fit in that goal. ‘Excersice-lady-Steve’ has an incredibly important and busy job with irregular hours and needs to be able to fly from here to everywhere at any time. We meet ‘excersice-lady-Steve’ this weekend when we cross on the stairs and have a chat. At the bottom of the stairs, a young Filipina woman remains standing, sporty type, short denim skirt, pink shirt and slip-on loafers with an elegant heel. After about five minutes he excuses himself, making a head movement toward the young woman: “my excersise lady wait, we were supposed to go jogging but I forgot my running shoes” he declares. A little later, when we are lying by the pool, ‘excersice-lady-Steve’ returns from his trip with a bag in his hand. ‘Excersice-lady’ follows him about five feet away up the stairs toward his apartment. ‘How nice for him’, we say to each other, ‘he has found a pair of running shoes’. We enjoy another wonderful hour by the pool. We didn’t see ‘excersice-lady-Steve’ again that day.

‘Insta-Tanya: ‘Insta-Tanya’ has a killer body and a slick friend. You smell them before you see them, a mixture of coconut oil and expensive perfume. ‘Insta-Tanya’ changes her clothes for a tiny bikini open and exposed at the sink in the public restroom. She is saving up for a breast augmentation. After that, she probably won’t change clothes in public, but now there’s nothing to hide. After her daily photo-shoot in and around Orchard, she settles down on her poolside lounger that has been set up in the right position by her slick boyfriend. For the next two hours, ‘insta-Tanya’ ensures an even body-to-sun ratio. She is very bendy. Her smooth friend accompanies her half the time. The other half he runs errands for ‘insta-Tanya’ and makes loud phone calls in a language unknown to me.

There also seems to be a Dutch woman staying at Parksuites. Demanding but friendly. She does not tip housekeeping, so I hear two ladies of housekeeping complain. Too bad I haven’t met her yet, who knows, maybe we have a click.
