In de tropen is het warm, warm EN vochtig. Bepakt met drie grote koffers met Nederlands zomergoed en schoenen verhuisde ik naar Singapore. Ik ging er van uit dat ik goed voorbereid in het dure en ‘tiny-snit’ Singapore de komende twee jaar vooruit zou kunnen zonder te shoppen. “Da was nie”.

Meer dan de helft van de inhoud van de drie grote koffers vol met Nederlands zomergoed, hangt of ligt ongedragen te dampen in een van onze kasten. Hippo’s (vochtvreters) zuigen zich vol met vocht die – zo is de bedoeling – daarmee niet in de kleding trekt. Het lijkt te helpen al is het frisse ‘vers-gewassen-luchtje’ ver te zoeken. De stapels ruiken muf en zurig, net als mijn vers gewassen goed overigens als dat niet snel genoeg droogt op top-vochtige dagen.

‘What was I thinking?’

Hoe dun het materiaal ook is, iets met mouwtjes brengt hier in Singapore het slechtste in me naar boven en ruk ik binnen 5 minuten van het gecondenseerde lijf.

Voordat je denkt dat ik met de inhoud van zo’n anderhalve koffer nog steeds een mega-garderobe heb: FOUT. Een halve koffer kleding heb ik namelijk in maart weer mee terug genomen naar Nederland. Hoe dun het materiaal ook is, iets met mouwtjes brengt in Singapore het slechtste in me naar boven en ruk ik binnen 5 minuten van het gecondenseerde lijf. Net als alles wat niet van flinterdun katoen of linnen is gemaakt. En broeken – “what was I thinking” – daar begin ik hier niet eens aan. Een broek voor als ik reis – in het vliegtuig is het niet zelden ijskoud – en één slobberbroek tegen zoemende gasten in de avond volstaat.

Voor wat betreft de categorie schoenen die geschikt is om hier te dragen, kan ik kort zijn: slippers en sandaaltjes! En dat laatste klinkt eleganter dan dat het is, zoals je verderop zult lezen. Voor (lange) wandelingen trek ik mijn gympen aan, met van die charmante voetkousjes van katoen tegen het ‘zweetschuren’. Al mijn ‘gezellige’ schoenen – lees met een hakje of touwtjes en reepjes leer – staan eveneens ongedragen in de kast. Zelfs als het ‘afgekoeld’ is in de avond, heeft dit soort schoeisel het effect op mijn voeten als een touw om een rollade.

Je kunt me inmiddels uittekenen in een van mijn niemendalletjes. Jurken met zo min en zo dun mogelijke stof van katoen of linnen. Ik blijf zoeken naar de ultieme tropen garderobe waarmee ik ook met goed fatsoen de straat op kan. Ik zoek in Singapore, in Bali en online. En inmiddels ben ik wat bescheiden miskoopjes en ook succesjes verder.

De maatvoering van de kleding in Singapore valt overigens niet tegen, ook daarin is Singapore aardig ingesteld op multi-cultureel. Desondanks hangt hier veel in de winkels dat OF van synthetische stoffen is gemaakt OF überhaupt teveel stof bevat (waarom ze hier jassen verkopen is me een raadsel) OF – zoals te verwachten – veel te duur is.

Natuurlijk kom ik met mijn één koffer-garderobe – stiekem nog steeds bijna een kast vol – een heel eind. De wasmachine draait een extra rondje en ik ben fan van de Balinese sarongs. Sarongs in de prachtigste kleuren in dunne katoenen stof, zijn heel geschikt voor de tropen. Ik knoop ze als jurk of als rok kunstig om mijn lijf. Prima voor binnenshuis. En voor buitenshuis, heb ik toch zeker drie jurken waar ik mee kan variëren.

Juf Trees

Ik lijk op ‘juf Trees’ zo spotten man- en dochterlief, waarbij ze mijn nieuwe sandalen typeerde als het meest sexloze schoeisel ooit door mij gedragen.

Schoenen kopen in Singapore met maat 41-42 (dames) of maat >45 (heren) is gewoonweg lastig. Aangezien de paar sandalen die ik heb inmiddels stukgelopen en half vergaan zijn door het tropenvocht, heb ik een paar (wandel)sandalen in Nederland besteld en dochterlief mee laten nemen. Ik lijk op ‘juf Trees’ zo spotten man- en dochterlief, waarbij ze deze nieuwe sandalen typeerde als het meest sexloze schoeisel ooit door mij gedragen. Ik heb gedreigd Crocks te kopen – razend populair in Singapore – als ze me niet met wat meer compassie aanmoedigen om mijn arme voeten te ontzien.

Met weemoed kijk ik naar de 10 paar schoenen die hier staan weg te teren. Die neem ik in december mee terug naar Nederland, in de hoop dat ik ze daar en t.z.t. weer kan dragen. Afgestyled met een complete outfit waaronder mijn appeltjes groene jas die thuis op me hangt te wachten.

Ik geef niet op, die tropen garderobe komt er! En ik raak vast nog wel gewend aan deze gestoomde warme lucht zodat ik net als de Aziatische schone dames, onbezweet, met mat gezicht zonder condensfilm en zonder ontplofte tropische haardos over straat kan flaneren. Met lange mouwen en sexy schoenen – met een hakje natuurlijk – welriekend naar frangipangi en groene thee.

Sta jij op het punt naar Singapore of naar een ander tropisch oord te vertrekken? Heerlijk! De zon schijnt hier veel en zelfs als het regent is het warm. SINGAPOREANDME TROPEN GARDEROBE PAKTIPS

👉 Katoen en Linnen draagt het fijnst in de tropen! Alles wat vocht vasthoudt, kun je beter thuis laten!

💃 Mijn voorkeur gaat uit naar jurken en shirtjes met spaghetti-, hemd- of kapmouwtjes als ik binnen zonder airco of buiten uit de zon ben. En ga je er op uit in de buitenlucht? Kies dan voor iets met loszittende lange(re) mouwen.

🕺Linnen broeken (kort of lang) en katoenen of linnen shirts / blouses draag je hier met plezier. Een katoenen broek kan natuurlijk ook, let er wel op dat hij niet te dik is. En jij mazzelaar kunt in je vrije tijd natuurlijk gewoon de hele dag in je zwembroek lopen.

👘 Neem een paar ultra-dunne (katoen of linnen uiteraard) omslagdoeken of kimono-achtige jasjes mee voor in de MRT, taxi of andere ruimtes waar de airco je laat bevriezen.

🩲 Kies katoenen – of bamboe – ondergoed! Niets zo zweterig als een nauwsluitende hipster (of boxer voor de mannen) en BH van synthetische materiaal. In Singapore zijn deze in katoen lastig te krijgen, dus neem dit vooral mee uit Europa.

🩴 Slippers en sandalen die je voeten de ruimte geven, ook als ze anderhalve maat opzwellen, wil je niet missen hier. Instappers (van Vans bijvoorbeeld) zijn ook handig, omdat je ze snel uit kunt doen als je ergens op visite gaat (schoenen aan in huis is een no-go in Singapore). Let op het materiaal en het profiel van de zool; Toms en espadrilles bijvoorbeeld worden spekglad in de regen en hennep en regen gaan überhaupt niet goed samen. Heb je een grote maat? Reken er dan niet op dat je in Singapore kunt slagen voor een nieuw paar.

👟 Last van zweetvoeten? Neem geurvreters mee! En wen je direct aan om je schoenen buiten je condo (of hotelkamer) te laten staan. De dikke vochtige lucht in huis, versterkt vieze luchtjes in no-time.

🏃‍♂️ Ben je sportief in de buitenlucht? Kies dan voor een UV-werende outfit. Het beschermt je huid en weerkaatst ook de zon, waardoor het minder heet voelt als je buiten bent.

🧢 Petje of hoedje mag zeker niet ontbreken! Je hoofd – en nek – beschermen tegen de zon en de hitte is altijd een goed idee.

🌂 Voeg een paraplu – met UV werende binnenkant – toe aan je vaste uitrusting. Deze zijn overigens in Singapore dan weer wel heel goed te verkrijgen.

🇬🇧 Stay cool in Singapore

In the tropics, it is hot, hot AND humid. Packed with three large suitcases of Dutch summer clothes and shoes, I moved to Singapore. I assumed that I would be well-prepared and able to get by for the next two years without shopping in expensive and ‘tiny-cut’ Singapore. “That was not the case”.

More than half of the contents of the three large suitcases filled with Dutch summer clothes are hanging/lying unworn and sweating in one of our closets. Hippo’s (moisture absorbers) suck up moisture that – in theory – should not seep into the clothing. It seems to help, although the fresh ‘freshly-washed scent’ is hard to find. The piles smell musty and sour, just like my freshly washed clothes, if they do not dry quickly enough on extremely humid days.

What was I thinking

No matter how thin the fabric is, anything with sleeves brings out the worst in me and I rip it off within 5 minutes of putting it on my condensed body.

Before you think that I am not doing too badly with the contents of about one and a half suitcases: WRONG. I actually took half a suitcase of clothes back to the Netherlands in March. Just like anything that is not made of thin cotton or linen. And pants – what was I thinking – I don’t even bother with them here. I have one pair of pants for traveling – it is often freezing on the plane – and one baggy pair mainly to protect against buzzing guests in the evening. As for the category of shoes suitable to wear here, I can be brief: flip-flops and sandals! And the latter sounds more elegant than it is, as you will read later on. For (long) walks, I put on my sneakers, of course. All my ‘nice’ shoes – as in with an elegant heel or with less than 3 cm of leather straps – are also unworn in the closet. Even when it cools down in the evening, this type of footwear has the same effect on my feet as a rope on a roast.

You can picture me in one of my flimsy dresses these days. Dresses with as little and as thin fabric as possible, made of cotton or linen. I keep searching for the ultimate tropical wardrobe that I can wear out in public with good manners. I search in Singapore, in Bali, and online. And by now, I have had a few modest mistakes and successes. The sizing of clothing in Singapore is not bad actually, it is quite multicultural in that aspect. Nevertheless, there is a lot in the stores here that is either made of synthetic fabrics or contains too much fabric in general (why they sell jackets and sweaters here is a mystery to me) or – as expected – is too expensive. You really don’t have to feel sorry for me, with my one-suitcase wardrobe – secretly still a closet full – I can get by quite well. The washing machine runs an extra cycle, and I am a huge fan of Balinese sarongs. The sarongs in the most beautiful colors, made of thin cotton fabric, are very suitable for the tropics. I skillfully tie them around my body as a dress or skirt. Perfect for indoors. And for outdoors, I have at least three dresses that I can mix and match.

Miss Trees

I look like ‘Miss Trees’, as they dubbed these new sandals as the most sexless footwear I have ever worn.

Buying shoes in Singapore with size 41-42 is simply difficult. Since the few sandals I have are now worn out and half destroyed by the moisture, I ordered a pair of (hiking) sandals in the Netherlands and had my daughter bring them with her. According to my husband and daughter, I look like ‘Miss Trees’, as they dubbed these new sandals as the most sexless footwear I have ever worn. I threatened to buy Crocs – extremely popular in Singapore – if they don’t encourage me with a little more compassion to spare my poor feet. I look at the 10 pairs of shoes standing here decaying with nostalgia. I will take them back to the Netherlands in December, hoping that I can wear them there and in the future. Styled with a complete outfit, including my apple green coat waiting for me at home.

I won’t give up, that tropical wardrobe will come! And I will surely get used to this steamed warm air so that, like the beautiful Asian ladies, I can stroll the streets without sweating, with a matte face without a film of condensation, and without an exploded tropical hairstyle. Of course, with long sleeves and sexy shoes with a heel, smelling of frangipani and green tea.

SINGAPOREANDME TROPICAL WARDROBE PACKING TIPS

👍 Cotton and linen are the most comfortable to wear in the tropics! Leave anything that retains moisture at home!

💃 I prefer dresses and shirts with spaghetti, sleeveless, or cap sleeves when I am indoors without air conditioning or outside in the shade. And if going out in the open air, opt for something with loose-fitting long sleeves.

🕺 Linen pants (short or long) and cotton or linen shirts/blouses are a joy to wear here. A cotton pair of pants is also fine, just make sure they are not too thick. And lucky you, you can just walk around in your swim trunks all day in your free time.

👘 Bring a few ultra-thin (cotton or linen, of course) wraps or kimono-like jackets for the MRT, taxi, or other spaces where the air conditioning freezes you.

🩲 Choose cotton – or bamboo – underwear! Nothing is as sweaty as tight-fitting hipsters (or boxers for men) and bras made of synthetic materials. These are hard to find in cotton in Singapore, so be sure to bring them from Europe.

🩴 Slippers and sandals that give your feet room, even if they swell up by one and a half sizes, are a must-have here. Slip-on shoes (like Vans, for example) are also handy because you can quickly take them off when visiting someone (wearing shoes indoors is a no-go in Singapore). Pay attention to the material and the sole profile; Toms and espadrilles, for example, become very slippery in the rain, and hemp and rain don’t go well together. If you have a large shoe size, don’t count on finding a new pair in Singapore.

👟 Do you suffer from sweaty feet? Bring odor absorbers! And get used to leaving your shoes outside your condo (or hotel room) immediately. The thick, humid air inside the house amplifies odors in no time.

🏃‍♂️ Are you active outdoors? Opt for UV-protective clothing. It protects your skin and reflects the sun, making it feel less hot when you’re outside.

🧢 A cap or hat is a must-have! Protecting your head and neck from the sun and heat is always a good idea.

🌂 Add a UV-protective umbrella to your essential gear. These are readily available in Singapore.
