Mijn tweede verjaardag als Expat in Singapore, vijf sterren en een beetje. Is er een Star Wars-conventie in Singapore? vragen we ons af als we uit de metro bij City Hall stapten.

Horden mensen – vrij ongebruikelijk voor Singapore – stromen rijen dik in rode T-shirts City Hall uit. In een flits denk ik iets van Star Wars te zien, maar achteraf vermoed ik dat mijn fantasie op hol is geslagen. Anyhoedanook, een demonstratie kan het in ieder geval niet zijn (lees meer hierover in mijn blog: Singapore Regelt het wel).

We lopen in tegenovergestelde richting van de meute. Daar lijkt alles normaal. Rustig, geordend en als we even later op een terras in Chijmes neerstrijken, zelfs nagenoeg uitgestorven. We proosten op mijn vijf sterren plus. We keuvelen wat, dat mag als je vijf sterren plus bent, over het leven in het algemeen en het leven als Expat in Singapore in het bijzonder. We fantaseren over onze toekomst die, ondanks mijn respectabele leeftijd, gloort aan de horizon.

We hebben een tafeltje gereserveerd bij Jypsy aan One Fullerton. Aan de rivier zodat we goed zicht hebben op de generale repetitie – herstel één van de vele generale repetities – van de National Day Parade Singapore (NDP). Er gaat een lampje branden als we de metro naar Fullerton nemen: natuurlijk, de Parade wordt ook geoefend! Ook op dit metrostation zijn er hordes mensen, in rode, gele of groene T-shirts. Ze worden geleid door tientallen vrijwilligers. We moeten altijd een beetje grinniken om het enthousiasme van de vrijwillige uncles en aunties die altijd en overal, vaak volstrekt overbodig, met lightsabers, toch een tikkeltje Star Wars, de gewenste looprichting staan aan te geven.

Feestdagen in Singapore

De weg is afgezet, er is zelfs politie op de been. Vol verbazing kijken we naar de gelikte organisatie van deze generale repetitie. Drie zaterdagen op een rij wordt werkelijk alles uit de kast gehaald om – dit jaar op zaterdag 9 augustus voor het echie de 59^ste – onafhankelijkheidsdag van Singapore te vieren. Een van de nationale feestdagen in Singapore. Kosten noch moeite worden gespaard om dit vertoon van militaire kracht, nationale trots en culturele diversiteit vlekkeloos te kunnen vieren.

Diner time

We zitten front row klaar om te genieten van het spektakel. Ondertussen krijgen we de heerlijkste hapjes voorgeschoteld: mini zeewier taco’s met verse tonijn, een nest friet (wie wil dat nu niet) met mini Wagyu hamburgers, een softshell crab sushi rol en sticky beef op een stokje. Ik voel me jarig.

De Parade

Allereerst zweven parachutisten in de lucht en maakt een varende pontonbrug in slakkentempo een ronde over de Marina Bay met mariniers in saluthouding. Een gigantische Singaporese vlag, verzwaard met lood, cirkelt aan een Chinook rond, vergezeld door twee Apaches. Met een gigantische knal verschijnen vijf straaljagers vanachter het markante Marina Bay Sands hotel in V-formatie. En ik schrik me vervolgens wezenloos als de eerste van de traditionele 21 saluutschoten* wordt afgevuurd vanaf de pontonbrug.

21 KANONSCHOTEN
*Vroeger, toen schepen nog kanonnen aan boord hadden, werd het afvuren van kanonnen gezien als een teken van vrede, omdat een schip met lege kanonnen zich kwetsbaar maakte. Oorspronkelijk vuurden schepen zeven schoten af en forten aan land beantwoordden dit met drie schoten voor elk schot van het schip, wat resulteerde in 21 schoten.

Inmiddels wordt het internationale saluut van 21 schoten, wereldwijd gebruikt als eerbetoon aan staatshoofden, koninklijke families, en tijdens belangrijke nationale gelegenheden.

Spetterend vuurwerk

Aan het einde van de avond worden we getrakteerd op het mooiste vuurwerk dat je maar kunt bedenken. In combinatie met iLight Singapore en tegen de achtergrond van Marina Bay Sands en de skyline van het financiële district, is het onwaarschijnlijk spectaculair om mee te maken.

Vijf sterren – Overpeinzingen

Vijf sterren sieren niet alleen mij, maar ook de Singaporese vlag. Die vijf sterren op de vlag staan voor de vijf idealen van de natie: democratie, vrede, vooruitgang, rechtvaardigheid en gelijkheid. De halve maan op de vlag staat voor een jonge natie in ontwikkeling.

Ik blijf me verwonderen over dit kleine land dat tot grootse dingen in staat is. Als het braafste en slimste jongetje van de klas, waarmee onmogelijk ruzie te krijgen is, draagt de Singaporeaan hier trots aan bij. Ondanks de drukte wordt er niet geduwd, getrokken of geruzied. Geen lallende menigten, geen zangkoren. Zelfs uitspattingen in de vorm van vuurwerk zijn volledig georkestreerd. De sfeer is altijd en overal gemoedelijk. Geen rellen, maar ook geen extase. Afgedwongen en gekunsteld? Of cultuurbepaald en respectvol? Ik ben er nog niet helemaal uit. Ik waardeer de gemoedelijkheid, maar mis af en toe ook de uitbundigheid en moet mijn recalcitrante kant zo nu en dan beteugelen.

Singaporean zijn trots op Singapore. En op een dag als deze spat dat er nog eens extra van af en laat ik mijn scepsis over militair en georkestreerde praal even varen. Ik maak een kleine doch diepe buiging. En ik prijs me gelukkig met mijn vijf sterren (plus) en ben plaatsvervangend trots op Singapore en die van haar.

Cultuur in Singapore

NATIONAL DAY PARADE SINGAPORE
Een belangrijk onderdeel van de Singaporese cultuur is het groots vieren met elkaar van de onafhankelijkheid.

1. **Parade:** De parade zelf is een belangrijk onderdeel van de vieringen, met deelname van militaire eenheden, civiele organisaties en scholen. Het evenement toont Singapore’s militaire kracht, culturele diversiteit en nationale trots.

2. **Locatie:** De locatie van de NDP varieert. Vroeger werd de parade vaak gehouden op de Padang, maar tegenwoordig wordt deze vaak gehouden in het Marina Bay Floating Platform of in het Singapore National Stadium. Kaartjes hiervoor zijn alleen door Singaporean te bemachtigen maar er zijn veel plekken waar je kunt genieten van de vliegshow en het vuurwerk. Op de NDP is het extreem druk, een van de drie rehearsals bezoeken is een goed alternatief.

3. **Thema:** Elk jaar heeft de NDP een specifiek thema dat de huidige geest en aspiraties van de natie weerspiegelt. Dit thema komt terug in de decoraties, optredens en toespraken. Dit jaar is het thema “Together, As One United People.”4. **Toespraken:** De premier van Singapore houdt een toespraak waarin de prestaties van het afgelopen jaar worden besproken en de visie voor de toekomst wordt uiteengezet.

5. **Optredens:** De parade bevat culturele optredens, zang, dans en vuurwerk. En er zijn luchtshows door de Republic of Singapore Air Force.

6. **Buurtfeesten en Betrokkenheid:** Naast de officiële parade zijn er talloze evenementen en activiteiten in de hele stad, zoals straatfeesten, concerten en gemeenschapsbijeenkomsten. Veel Singaporezen dragen rood en wit, de kleuren van de nationale vlag, om hun patriottisme te tonen.

7. **Live stream voor iedereen:** De NDP wordt live uitgezonden op televisie en via online platforms, zodat mensen die niet fysiek aanwezig kunnen zijn, de vieringen toch kunnen volgen.

🇬🇧 Five Stars: Singapore & Me

My second birthday in Singapore, five stars and a bit. Is there a Star Wars convention in Singapore? We wonder as we step out of the MRT at City Hall.

Crowds of people – quite unusual for Singapore – stream out of City Hall in rows, wearing red T-shirts. For a moment, I think I see something from Star Wars, but I later suspect my imagination has run wild. Anyhow, it certainly isn’t a demonstration (read more about this in my blog: Singapore Fine City).

We walk in the opposite direction of the crowd. Everything seems as usual over there. Calm, orderly, and as we settle down at a terrace in Chijmes a little later, it is almost deserted. We toast to my five stars plus. We chat a bit, as one can when they have five stars plus, about life in general and Singapore in particular. We fantasize about our future, which still glows on the horizon despite my respectable age.

We made a reservation for a table at Jypsy One Fullerton. By the river so we can properly admire the Rehearsal – or rather, one of the many rehearsals – of the National Day Parade Singapore (NDP). A light bulb goes off when we take the MRT to Fullerton: The Parade is also being rehearsed. At this metro station, there are also crowds of people, in red, yellow, or green T-shirts. They are being guided by dozens of volunteers. We always chuckle a bit at the enthusiasm of the volunteer uncles and aunties who, often completely unnecessary, use lightsabers (see, a touch of Star Wars occurs) to indicate the desired direction.

The road is closed, and there is even police presence. We watch in amazement at the impacabel organization of this rehearsal. For three Saturdays in a row, everything is pulled out to celebrate – this year on Saturday, August 9th for real – Singapore’s 59th Independence Day. No expense or effort is spared to celebrate this display of military strength, national pride, and cultural diversity flawlessly.

Diner Time

We sit front row, ready to enjoy the spectacle. Meanwhile, we are served the most delicious snacks: mini seaweed tacos with fresh tuna, a nest of fries (who wouldn’t want that), a softshell crab sushi roll, and sticky beef on a stick.

The Parade

First, parachutists float in the air, and a floating pontoon bridge slowly makes its way around Marina Bay with marines standing in salute. A giant Singaporean flag, weighted with lead, circles around with a Chinook, accompanied by two Apaches. With a huge bang, five jet fighters appear from behind the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel in V-formation. And I am then startled by the first of the traditional 21-gun* salutes fired from the pontoon bridge.

*21 GUN SALUTE
In the past, when ships still had cannons on board, firing cannons was seen as a sign of peace, because a ship with empty cannons made itself vulnerable. Originally, ships fired seven shots, and forts on land responded with three shots for each shot from the ship, resulting in 21 shots.

Nowadays, the international salute of 21 shots is used worldwide as a tribute to heads of state, royal families, and during important national occasions.

Spectaculair Fireworks

At the end of the evening, we are treated to the most beautiful fireworks you can imagine. Combined with iLight Singapore and set against the backdrop of Marina Bay Sands and the financial district skyline, it is incredibly spectacular to experience.

Five starts

Five stars not only adorn me but also the Singaporean flag. Those five stars on the flag represent the five ideals of the nation: democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality. The crescent moon on the flag stands for a young nation in development.

I continue to marvel at this small country that is capable of achieving great things. Like the best-behaved and smartest student in the class, with whom it is impossible to quarrel, the Singaporean proudly contributes to this. Despite the busyness, there is no pushing, shoving, or arguing. No drunken crowds, no chanting. Even displays of excess, in the form of fireworks, are fully orchestrated. The atmosphere is congenial, always and everywhere. No ecstasy, but also no riots. Enforced and artificial? Or culturally determined and respectful? I haven’t quite figured it out yet. I do appreciate the congeniality, but I sometimes miss the exuberance and have to occasionally rein in my rebellious side.

Singaporeans are proud of Singapore. And on a day like this, it radiates even more, and I set aside my skepticism about military and orchestrated pomp. I make a small yet deep bow. And I count myself lucky with my five stars (plus) and feel vicariously proud of Singapore and its people.

Singapore Culture

What to Expect at the NDP

1. Parade: The parade itself is a significant part of the celebrations, featuring military units, civil organizations, and schools. The event showcases Singapore’s military strength, cultural diversity, and national pride.
2. Location: The location of the NDP varies. It is traditionally held at the Padang, but nowadays it is often held at the Marina Bay Floating Platform or the Singapore National Stadium. Tickets are only available to Singaporeans, but there are many places to enjoy the air show and fireworks. The NDP is extremely crowded, so attending one of the three rehearsals is a good alternative.
3. Themes: Each year, the NDP has a specific theme reflecting the current spirit and aspirations of the nation. This theme is evident in the decorations, performances, and speeches. This year’s theme is “Together, As One United People.” It emphasizes the collective strength of the people and the importance of unity and collaboration to shape the future and support each other.
4. Speeches: The Prime Minister of Singapore gives a speech discussing the achievements of the past year and outlining the vision for the future.
5. Performances: The parade includes cultural performances, singing, dancing, and fireworks. There are also air shows by the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
6. Civic Engagement: Besides the official parade, there are numerous events and activities across the city, such as street parties, concerts, and community gatherings. Many Singaporeans wear red and white, the colors of the national flag, to show their patriotism.
7. Broadcast: The NDP is broadcast live on television and online platforms, allowing people who cannot be physically present to follow the celebrations.
